SM Cares marks World Oceans Day 2026 with coastal cleanup efforts for a waste-free future

7,500 SM employees, volunteers and partners mobilized for World Oceans Day 2026 to divert waste from the sea

This World Oceans Day, SM Cares brought the SM Green Movement to shore, reminding communities that protecting the ocean begins long before waste reaches the sea.

In celebration of World Oceans Day 2026, SM Cares led coastal cleanup efforts under the banner “Empowering Communities for an SM Waste-Free Future,” mobilizing 7,500 employees, tenants, volunteers, partners, and local stakeholders to take part in shared action for cleaner coastlines and healthier marine ecosystems. 19,000 kilograms of trash was successfully diverted from the ocean 36% less than the previous year.

The record-breaking attendance this year reflects the growing support for the Autism Community through collective programs and efforts done by SM Cares and the ASP in forging an Autism-OK Philippines.

Nationwide Global Youth Summit 2025 Empowers Over 40,000 Youth

Powered by SM Cares’ unwavering commitment to uplift children and youth, the Global Youth Summit 2025 brings together passionate youth advocates, transforming bold visions into lasting change for communities nationwide.

The Global Youth Summit (GYS) 2025 has marked a historic milestone, gathering over 40,000 young leaders, innovators, and advocates nationwide through simultaneous events across SM malls. Organized by SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, in partnership with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Philippines, the summit highlighted the strength of the Filipino youth as a nationwide movement for change.

From Luzon to Mindanao, students, youth groups, and advocates came together for thought-provoking discussions, keynote sessions, and collaborative activities that amplified the collective voice of the Filipino youth. The summit tackled pressing themes of empowerment, sustainability, innovation, and leadership, reflecting the youth’s role in shaping the country’s future.

“The youth are not just leaders of tomorrow—they are a driving force for change today. The Global Youth Summit proves what is possible when we empower young people nationwide,” said Royston Cabunag, SM Cares Program Director for Children and Youth.

Leonard Faustino, Executive Director of Global Peace Foundation Philippines, added: “Collaboration across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao has created one of the largest youth platforms in the country. This summit is proof that when given space and support, our youth can lead transformative change.”

While the SM Mall of Asia Arena leg drew thousands of participants and nationwide recognition, the heart of GYS 2025 was its collective nationwide reach—with simultaneous summits held across 17 SM malls.

Each of the 17 provincial summit locations was deliberately anchored on one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that every global goal receives equal importance within a holistic platform that champions innovative and actionable solutions for communities nationwide. In line with this, the provincial legs gave young people in local communities the chance to share solutions and contribute to projects aligned with the respective SDGs.

SM Cinema Brings Magic Through ‘Movies for the Blind’

For most, watching a movie is an everyday treat. But for those with visual impairments, it’s often an experience left out of reach. Led by Project ADAM (Audio Description Awareness Movement), SM Cares, SM Cinema, GMA Pictures, GMA Public Affairs, and Hit Productions Inc., with support from The Nippon Foundation, Overbrook School for the Blind, CBM Global, ICEVI, Beneficent Technology, Inc. (Bookshare) and Quantum Post, families and individuals across the country are discovering the magic of the movies—together.

SM Cinema at SM City Calamba is filled with heart warming applause and positive vibes during the 'Movies for the Blind' screening.

As part of SM Supermalls’ ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion, SM malls have begun hosting audio-described film screenings specially designed for persons who are blind or visually impaired. These unique screenings include narrated descriptions of scenes, settings, and actions, allowing all moviegoers to share in the full experience.

Happy Walk 2025 Brings Over 8,000 Attendees to Celebrate Abilities and Inclusion

In a powerful display of unity, inclusivity, and advocacy, Happy Walk 2025 successfully gathered thousands of individuals with Down Syndrome, their families, and supporters across the country on March 30, 2025. The nationwide event, hosted by SM Cares in partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI), was celebrated at SMX Manila (SM Mall of Asia Complex) and in simultaneous events at SM City Cebu and SM City Bacolod. Additionally, SM CDO Downtown Premier held its celebration earlier on March 23, 2025, while SM Center Ormoc joined the movement with the All for Down Night Run last March 27, 2025.

Women on Fire 2025: Empowering Women, Building Resilient Communities

In recognition of National Women’s Month and Fire Prevention Month, SM Cares launched Women on Fire, a celebration of the remarkable leadership, strength, courage, and resilience of women in fire prevention, disaster response, and community safety. Through collaboration with key government agencies and private organizations, Women on Fire served as a platform for education, awareness, and empowerment, reaching over 25,000 participants across all initiatives.

SM Cares, in partnership with the United Nations Philippines and the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), kicked off Women’s Month on February 28 with the Purple Illumination Ceremony, lighting up the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Globe and mall façades nationwide. As a globally recognized symbol of justice, dignity, and women’s rights, the color purple marked the start of National Women’s Month in the Philippines, reinforcing SM’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment.

SM Southmall came alive as SM Cares and the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) hosted the second edition of Happy Talk: Usapang Down Syndrome 2025. The event gathered over 600 participants, including government officials, educators, therapists, and community stakeholders, to raise awareness and create safer, more inclusive spaces for individuals with Down syndrome.

SM Cares, SM Supermalls' corporate social responsibility arm, in partnership with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), kicked off the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW). The campaign aims to raise awareness and act against VAW.

SM kicks off breast cancer awareness month with Beautiful Girl

In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SM Supermalls, through its corporate social responsibility arm SM Cares, recently held a one-of-a-kind ballet show in partnership with the Philippine Ballet Theatre. The event showcased powerful stories of breast cancer survival and advocacy through dance. It took place on September 29 at the SMX Aura Convention Center in Taguig City.

Over 500 breast cancer warriors, families, and friends were in attendance to show support to the brave and resilient  Beautiful Girls.

"Beautiful Girl: Echoes of Strength" is an expressive ballet by the Philippine Ballet Theater that explores the journey of breast cancer patients from a deeply artistic and compassionate perspective, emphasizing that every woman, regardless of her battle, is a "Beautiful Girl" deserving of admiration and support.
