Surviving the Holiday Rush: Tips for Motorcyclists

The holiday season in the Philippines is a festive time, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, especially for motorcycle riders. With traffic jams, crowded parking lots, and an increase in road activities, navigating through the chaos can be daunting. However, with the right preparation and planning, riders can still enjoy the holiday season safely and efficiently.

Below are a few tips to help you tackle the holiday rush when riding your motorcycle.

Plan your routes ahead of time

The holiday season often entails traffic that is heavier than usual, so plan your routes carefully. Use navigation apps to check real-time traffic conditions before heading out. Doing so can help you identify alternate routes that are less congested, and you'll also get to have a better idea of your estimated arrival times, so you can gauge whether leaving a bit earlier will save you more time in the long run. Stay updated on road conditions and check local traffic reports before leaving. It's also a good idea to have a backup plan and identify nearby service stations and hospitals in case of any emergencies.

Wadhwani Foundation enhances school-to-work journey in PH with AI and $1M annual grant funding per organization

Wadhwani Foundation, a private philanthropic institution, offers a 24/7 mobile-first AI-powered skilling platform called Wadhwani GenieAI that includes multiple AI Co-Pilots to bridge critical gaps between education and employment in the Philippines. The platform provides free career counseling tools and teacher training. The Foundation also offers grants of up to $1 million annually to organizations, supporting sustainable job creation and workforce upskilling.

At the Wadhwani Foundation Welcome Reception held at Yuchengco Museum, Makati City, President & CEO Dr. Ajay Kela shared that their free AI-powered platform equips Filipino learners with in-demand job skills and trains educators in AI-driven career counseling.

A survey recently conducted by the Foundation revealed that only 10% of K-12 graduates immediately enter the job market. While 83% pursue university education, only 25% of these university enrollees graduate from higher education institutions. The survey further showed that the remaining 75% who leave university without completing their degrees eventually join the workforce. Meanwhile, 1.5% of the graduates venture into entrepreneurship, while 5.5% fall into the category of “Not in Education, Employment, or Training.” These factors contribute to job instability and low wages.

Batang Matatag: A Stronger Partnership for a Stronger Future

Manila Water Foundation Joins Erceflora Probiotics and Save the Children Philippines to Expand Hygiene and Water Access for More Filipino Kids and Families

The Batang Matatag Campaign, a joint initiative by Erceflora Probiotics and Save the Children Philippines, has announced a significant expansion of its reach and a new partnership with the Manila Water Foundation.

Launched in 2022, the campaign addresses health challenges due to the lack of access to clean water and proper WASH and hygiene facilities. The Batang Matatag campaign invests in gut health and hygiene education for vulnerable communities, and the partnership with the Manila Water Foundation will help increase access to handwashing stations and water pumps in schools and communities across the country.

“Investing in our children’s gut health and hygiene is investing in our future. The Batang Matatag Campaign calls on all of us to play a part in building a healthier, stronger Philippines where every child has the chance to reach their full potential,” said Rica Mae Mateo from Erceflora Probiotics.

Deeply concerned by the rise of childhood mortality due to diarrhea in the Philippines, Erceflora Probiotics and Save the Children Philippines launched the Batang Matatag Campaign to combat this preventable illness. Launched in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in 2022, the campaign reached over 19,477 individuals in communities and schools, training over 1,000 adolescents in essential life skills, educated 500 residents on child health and nutrition, and achieved a remarkable 100% improvement in health levels within the communities it served.

This year, Batang Matatag expanded its reach this year to the Rizal province in Luzon, completing four hygiene promotion sessions and WASH caravans, and 12 nutrition promotion sessions. The campaign provided 2,500 hygiene kits for students, as well as Brigada Eskwela cleaning kits for 126 schools in Rizal and BARMM.

Batang Matatag also initiated educating school clinicians and nurses in 68 public schools in Antipolo about the role of probiotics and effective diarrhea management among school children.

Through this campaign, the communities benefited from newly constructed water pumps and handwashing stations, ultimately benefiting 65,007 individuals in both provinces.

"We are incredibly proud of Batang Matatag's impact in its first year, and thrilled to expand our reach to Luzon. With the support of our partners and communities, we are committed to continuing this vital work and ensuring that every Filipino child has the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong," Mateo added.

Families are also empowered to support the campaign. With every purchase of Erceflora Probiotics, a portion of the sale will be donated to the #BatangMatatag Campaign to help build more WASH facilities and create more hygiene education programs for vulnerable communities and partner schools in the country.

Erceflora is available in the nearest drug store or pharmacy, or online through the Sanofi Official Store. For more information, visit the Erceflora website here.

Rochelle and her mother share a warm moment outside their modest home. Rochelle, who paused her studies to care for her ill mother, is a beneficiary of Pure Bayanihan’s Pisonet WiFi vending machine, which allows her to earn an income while hoping to return to school in the future.

Mangroves: Nature-Based Solutions for the Philippines Coastal and Coral Reef Sustainability

The ocean and the coast play important roles in Southeast Asia as a residential area and a source of livelihood. The region’s coastline spans a total length of 234,000 km and its ocean  supplies around 40% of the global fish supply; at the same time, it is also the home to a third of mangroves and coral reefs in the region. Out of that many, 36,289 km of coastline belongs to the Philippines, making it an integral part for the nations. However, ocean and coastlines’ conditions greatly impacted due to the rising global temperature and climate crisis, including in the Philippines.

The latest report from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states that the world is experiencing the fourth global coral bleaching event. This coral bleaching will certainly have an impact, including in reduced livelihoods and food sources due to disturbed fish habitats. The challenges in the Philippines are exacerbated by environmental degradation, including pollution, overfishing, and destructive fishing practice.

The Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, a global initiative funded by PEPFAR and USAID and led by FHI 360, is calling for increased awareness about HIV prevention and how it can be easily accessed.

“The Philippines is currently experiencing the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the Western Pacific, with new cases surging among young people,” said EpiC Philippines Project Director Teresita Bagasao. “There needs to be a greater effort from both public and private sectors to reduce stigma and increase awareness of HIV, available services and safer sex practices.”

HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, can be acquired through body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluid, blood, and breast milk. Recent data in the Philippines shows that 96% of newly reported cases were acquired through sexual exposure. The virus affects humans by damaging immune system cells, making it harder to fight off other illnesses or diseases. If left untreated, HIV infections can develop into AIDS.

Book Nook empowers Filipinos through literacy, self-expression, and giving back

In December 2020, Sheeren Sy, a Singaporean architect affiliated with SM Supermalls, initiated the establishment of Book Nook. The idea began when Sy encountered a small, unattended shelf in Australia, where people could share books for free.

Shereen Sy, inspired by an unmanned book-sharing shelf in Melbourne, Australia, initiates the establishment of the Book Nook in 2020.

Inspired by this concept, she dreamed of bringing a similar initiative to the Philippines. Recognizing the spirit of "bayanihan" – a Filipino value that emphasizes communal unity and cooperation – Sy envisioned creating a space where Filipinos could share not just books but also their talents.
