Protecting Peatlands with Sustainable Swamp Fishing

Peat swamp fish pond checking
 by Alam Siak Lestari (ASL)

The worsening impact of climate change is driving the Philippines to prioritize peatland conservation. In May 2023, House Bill 8204 was approved to help improve the sustainable management of peatlands, recognizing their significance as natural climate change solutions. Peatland ecosystems, characterized by the accumulation of decomposed plant materials, permanent waterlogging, and various vegetation, offer nature-based climate mitigation by acting as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing more carbon than they release.

In the Philippines, there are two major peatlands: Agusan Marsh in Agusan Del Sur and Leyte Sab-a Basin in the island of Leyte.

When I first started researching sexual abuse in Philippine schools, I didn't expect to find much information. But as I delved deeper, I was shocked by the sheer number of stories and reports circulating about this issue. Calm-A-Lung for a Healthier Life this Lung Month

OMRON promotes stress-free nebulization with its clinically validated at-home nebulizers.

Lungs do more than just help us breathe. They work hard to provide the body with oxygen and protect it from harmful substances through coughing or sneezing. By keeping the lungs strong and healthy, we keep the body strong and healthy as well, enabling us to enjoy and live our life to the fullest.

It’s alarming to see that many take their lungs for granted and forget to care for them. Unhealthy habits or wrong lifestyle choices such as smoking can have a grave impact on the health of our lungs.

Focusing on the risks of stress, when not managed properly, stress can worsen the condition of those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, two respiratory disorders that are common worldwide and in the Philippines. Stressful situations prompt the body to release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which cause rapid breathing. This can make breathing even more difficult for a person suffering from COPD or asthma and can cause them to panic. Between managing the symptoms of both conditions and dealing with daily responsibilities and commitments, stress will only exacerbate a patient’s condition.

It collects rainwater from the facility’s roof and gutter, passing it through vinyl-coated mesh filters that ensure a water quality that is safe enough to serve non-potable needs, such as watering plants, cleaning, and toilet flushing.

Appreciate every breath you take

By Gelaine Louise Gutierrez

Did you know that we breathe in and out an average of 22,000 times daily? The lungs work hard every day to endure the flight of stairs, run after our dog when we forget its leash, catch the next scheduled train, and even chase someone who won’t stop and listen to what we have to say.

Breathing also helps us laugh our heart out at someone else’s “corny” jokes, talk non-stop with a friend and cry over someone who doesn’t deserve our tears.

‘Pag ganyan, phishing scam yan!’

By Gelaine Louise Gutierrez

Be a better LGBTQIA+ ally

By Gelaine Louise Gutierrez

An 'ally' is a person who is associated with another as a helper. An ally can be a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity or struggle. An ally is also someone with privilege who stands up for the fair and equal treatment of others. In recent years, the term has been adopted specifically to a person supporting one or more marginalized groups.

As decent human beings, we can help advocate for the rights of others and create a positive change in society. Being an ally of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and more) community, you are capable of inspiring long-term change.

Since their immune systems are still developing, young children and infants are especially vulnerable to several infections that can result in significant harm or death.

Here are some diseases, that for a time, became a distant memory because of the effectiveness of vaccines:

First-ever disc golf tourney in PH set to tee off on March 4-5

The first-ever disc golf tournament in the Philippines is set to tee off on March 4-5 in Amadeo, Cavite.

The Disc Golf Association of the Philippines (DGAP), in cooperation with the Philippine Disc Golf Association (PDGA) and in partnership with Figtree Companies' (FTC) Kavanah Communities, brings Lipad Pilipinas Open 2023, a competition for professional and amateur disc golf players from the Philippines and around the world, vying for a professional championship title.

Disc Golf, also known as Frisbee Golf, is very similar to golf, but instead of using golf clubs and balls aiming for a hole, disc golf players use discs and aim for a disc golf basket. The objective of every disc golf fame is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws, starting from a tee area and finishing with the disc coming to rest in the basket.

In the Philippines, the popularity of disc golf started in 2021, when Jon Mough, an American residing in Tagaytay City, introduced the game to Figtree Companies, a growing community developer, as a means to engage the people in the communities where they operate. Mough and FTC worked with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) to develop the ROAD TO DAMASCUS Disc Golf Course, the first and only 18-hole disc golf course in the Philippines located in Minatok West, Amadeo, Cavite.
