Agila Subic Compass (“Agila Subic”) who manages the multi-use facility and shipyard in Subic Bay, announced the rollout of its $1.5 million corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives spanning several programs that underscore the company’s commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment in Barangay Cawag and neighboring areas in Subic.
Agila Subic’s CSR framework initially focuses on three major initiatives: a road enhancement project; a mangrove planting program (now on its second year); and an Adopt-a-School Program for public schools in Cawag, all of which are geared towards rehabilitating critical ecosystems, enhancing education and strengthening essential infrastructure for the benefit of the host community and beyond.
Improving accessibility and safety via the Road Enhancement Project
Set for completion by yearend, the Road Enhancement Project covers the 5-kilometer stretch leading to Agila Subic’s facility in Barangay Cawag. Now in its final phase, road improvements include road paving and re-blocking, installation of safety signages, and deployment of LED (light emitting diode) solar-powered streetlights.
The road project, which is fully compliant with environmental and safety standards set by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and other relevant agencies, was conducted in coordination with the municipal engineering office of Subic to ensure strict adherence to technical and regulatory requirements.
“This road serves as a lifeline for workers, businesses and residents. With the improvements, we expect to boost not only accessibility to the facility but also generate more opportunities for economic growth. More importantly, this will make travel safer and more convenient, resulting in a better quality of life for Cawag residents and the entire community,” said Agila Subic General Manager Mark Glenn Millan.
Strengthening climate and community resilience through Mangrove Reforestation
Following the successful launch of its mangrove reforestation project in 2024, Agila Subic continues to fulfill its commitment to plant 20,000 mangrove seedlings across the 50-hectare mangrove area located in Sitio Cabitaugan (also known as Sitio Sapao), a small fishing village in Barangay Cawag. Agila Subic has partnered with Path Foundation Philippines Inc. (PFPI) (which was also supported by USAID) for the implementation of the mangrove project.
Mangrove reforestation is crucial in supporting fisheries, storing carbon, and strengthening coastal protection. The initiative benefits the fisherfolk community of Cawag and the Pagsalba Sa Bakhaw Ng Mga Kababaihan Ng Cawag – Women Managed Area (PBKC-WMA), a local women’s association involved in environmental stewardship.
The partnership between Agila Subic, PFPI, PBKC-WMA and the local government seek to restore the mangrove ecosystem of Sapao, providing extensive environmental as well as social and economic benefits by improving food security and climate resilience for the fishing community.
Enabling quality learning with the Adopt-a-School Program
Agila Subic will start 2026 with the formal launch of its Adopt-a-School Program for public elementary and high schools in Barangay Cawag. Under Republic Act No. 8525, the company will enter into a minimum two-year partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), committing to support the schools through various projects that include the construction of classrooms and repair of existing school facilities.
The company will also donate excess and unutilized furniture to the schools as part of its educational support initiative. A Memorandum of Agreement will be executed with DepEd at the onset of the partnership.“Investing in education is investing in the future workforce of Subic and the entire region. Our goal is to provide young students a place that is safe, comfortable and conducive to learning – one that will encourage and inspire them to thrive,” shared the Agila Subic executive.
The combined CSR initiatives align with Agila Subic’s mission to operate a world-class shipyard and multi-use facility while uplifting its host communities. Beyond job generation and economic activity in the region, the company underscores its responsibility to ensure that growth is shared and sustainable.
“These programs embody what we stand for,” Millan stated.
“Whether it’s building safer roads, restoring coastal ecosystems or improving schools, we are committed to making sure that our presence in Subic leaves a positive and lasting impact,” Millan concluded.
