TAYO ang mga Bagong Bayani! How the TAYO 21 awardees are making waves and driving community impact as the heroes of today

"They aren't gonna change this

We gotta do it ourselves

They think that it's over

But it's just begun

Only one thing can save us—Only the young (only the young)"

In an era where lasting change may often feel like a faraway dream, the anthem of Taylor Swift’s "Only the Young" rings with a powerful and urgent truth. The song captures a generational call to action that echoes through the lives of youth groups—youth groups that are rising to the occasion and proving that after all this time, they have been the harbingers of transformation all along.

In a remarkable testament to the power of youth-led initiatives, the TAYO Awards Foundation recognized and awarded the ten most accomplished youth organizations in the areas of Culture, Arts, and Heritage; Education and Technology; Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Climate Change Adaptation; Health, Wellbeing, and Human Development; as well as Livelihood and Entrepreneurship during its 21st National Awarding Ceremony held on August 19, Monday, at the Metropolitan Theater in Ermita, Manila.

Book Nook expands horizons with new branch at The Podium

In a celebratory atmosphere brimming with literary enthusiasm and community spirit, the Book Nook launched its second branch at the fifth level of The Podium on August 15, 2024. Building on the success of its first location at SM Aura, this new chapter ushers in an exciting milestone for Book Nook's mission to empower Filipinos through literacy, self-expression, and communal giving.

Book Nook, conceived by architect Sheeren Sy in December 2020, draws inspiration from a simple yet impactful book-sharing initiative she encountered in Melbourne, Australia. Sy's vision was to create a similar space in the Philippines that not only promotes reading but also encourages communal unity—a hallmark of the Filipino value of "bayanihan."

The architect behind the vision

The new Book Nook branch is a masterpiece by renowned Filipino architect Royal Pineda of Royal Pineda + Architecture Design. Pineda, celebrated for his work on iconic projects such as the New Clark International Airport and the Philippines Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, lends his visionary touch to the Book Nook. He has transformed the space into a community-centric hub that nurtures learning, sharing, and social interaction.

Architect Royal Pineda of Royal Pineda + Architecture Design discusses the design concept for the Book Nook at The Podium.

A harmonious space

The Book Nook's design is a testament to the power of simplicity and functionality. It is a continuous flow of space that seamlessly blends form and function. From nothingness, the Architect Pineda has crafted a venue for learning, a space where elements are interconnected and purposeful.

A corner of history

A standout feature of the new branch is the Philippine History corner, which includes numerous books donated by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) to promote historical knowledge. Among the collection are copies of Dr. Jose Rizal’s seminal work, Noli Me Tangere. This dedicated area aims to deepen visitors' understanding of Filipino heritage and history.

Stay protected, be PrEPared! Learn about choices on HIV prevention

The Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, a global initiative funded by PEPFAR and USAID and led by FHI 360, is calling for increased awareness about HIV prevention and how it can be easily accessed.

“The Philippines is currently experiencing the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the Western Pacific, with new cases surging among young people,” said EpiC Philippines Project Director Teresita Bagasao. “There needs to be a greater effort from both public and private sectors to reduce stigma and increase awareness of HIV, available services and safer sex practices.”

HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, can be acquired through body fluids such as semen, vaginal fluid, blood, and breast milk. Recent data in the Philippines shows that 96% of newly reported cases were acquired through sexual exposure. The virus affects humans by damaging immune system cells, making it harder to fight off other illnesses or diseases. If left untreated, HIV infections can develop into AIDS.

Book Nook empowers Filipinos through literacy, self-expression, and giving back

In December 2020, Sheeren Sy, a Singaporean architect affiliated with SM Supermalls, initiated the establishment of Book Nook. The idea began when Sy encountered a small, unattended shelf in Australia, where people could share books for free.

Shereen Sy, inspired by an unmanned book-sharing shelf in Melbourne, Australia, initiates the establishment of the Book Nook in 2020.

Inspired by this concept, she dreamed of bringing a similar initiative to the Philippines. Recognizing the spirit of "bayanihan" – a Filipino value that emphasizes communal unity and cooperation – Sy envisioned creating a space where Filipinos could share not just books but also their talents.
